What is Junie CLI?

Junie CLI is JetBrains' terminal-native version of its Junie coding agent, currently in an early access program. It lets developers drive Junie's agentic coding workflows from the command line instead of inside a JetBrains IDE. The agent is model-agnostic: you can point it at GPT, Claude, Gemini, or Grok-class models using either a JetBrains account, a Junie API key, or your own provider keys. A plan mode lets you review the proposed approach before anything is written, and headless execution makes it usable in CI/CD pipelines and automated scripts. Being an EAP release, flags and behaviors are still shifting between versions.

Key features

  • LLM-agnostic model support (GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok)
  • Plan mode for reviewing approach before changes
  • Headless mode for CI/CD and automation
  • Session resume with stored sessions

Pros

  • Not locked to a single model vendor
  • Runs in pipelines as well as interactively
  • Built by a major IDE vendor with strong editor tooling DNA

  • Early access — surface and flags still change
  • Pricing not yet public
  • Youngest ecosystem compared to established CLI agents

How to choose the right Coding & Development tool

The right coding tool depends on where you write code and how much of your codebase it can understand. IDE integration is the first filter — a tool that lives in your editor, sees your project files and respects your stack will help far more than a general chatbot you paste snippets into. Look for accurate completions, clear explanations of suggested changes, and strong refactoring and debugging support for your main languages. Privacy deserves real attention: check whether your code is used for training, and whether a self-hosted or enterprise option exists for sensitive projects. Price against the hours it actually saves — most developers feel the difference within the first week of real use.
